日本でも販売中の「CX-60」とおなじ、新開発のエンジン縦置きプラットフォームを採用。搭載するパワーユニットは340psの最高出力を発揮する3.3リッター直列6気筒ガソリンターボ＋モーターのマイルドハイブリッド仕様と、2.5リッター直列4気筒ガソリン・エンジンに17.8kWhのバッテリーとモーターを組み合わせたプラグイン・ハイブリッドの2種類。

組み合わされるトランスミッションは最新の8ATで、駆動方式は後輪駆動ベースの4WDとなる。

エクステリアは、CX-60の流れを汲みつつもフロントグリルや21インチのアルミホイールなどは専用デザイン。クロームメッキの使用箇所を増やし、高級感を高める。

インテリアは、3列シートを備えるのがポイントだ。定員は6 人乗り、7人乗り、8人乗りの3種類。2列目シートは仕様によって独立したキャプテンタイプを採用。3列目シートは未使用時、床下に格納出来る。さらにリアシート用エアコンなどによって快適性を高めた。

新型CX-90は2023年春に北米市場で販売開始予定。価格などは今後明かされる。日本へ導入されるか否かは不明。
